That First Car
Find information for:

Ahhhh – that first car. Great memories, right? A few of you were lucky enough to get nice new cars. The rest of us got them used – some more used than others. It didn’t matter though. They were ours. And they often make great fodder for stories. Here are some of our favorites. So have a read and start reminiscing about your first ride.

 My first car was...
"...a 1960-something white Valiant that I affectionately called the 'Vomit.' I paid about $100 for it. The floorboard in the front was almost completely rusted out, so as I drove along I could look down and see asphalt whizzing underneath the car (you can imagine the hundreds of Fred Flintstone jokes I had to endure). Driving through puddles was particularly traumatic, as water would splash right up into the car. My office was about 2 miles from home, which was about half a mile beyond the Vomit's maximum range. Let's just say I did my share of walking to and from work. My beloved Valiant was unable to leave under its own power, so I had to suffer the indignity of paying a tow truck $25 to haul it off."

My first car was...
"...a 1965 VW Bug. Recently restored by a dad whose daughter was obsessed with Elvis. White with hot pink trim and a tacky Graceland souvenir 'ELVIS 1' license plate. Blood red vinyl seats and Pepto-Bismol pink shag carpeting. For the previous owner it was a mobile shrine to the King of Rock and Roll. To me, it represented freedom."

My first car was...
"...a red, four-door Chevy Impala – equipped with a rusted-through floor and a V-8 engine. But, it lacked an exhaust system. My father disassembled our backyard swing set and attached the orange and green striped pole underneath the car with coat hangers. Now it had a tailpipe. The pole stuck out 2 and a half feet from under the back chrome bumper. The sound was awesome. The car ran for another 6 months and, at its time of retirement, I let the car go to the local high-school shop class for educational purposes. Rumor has it, the teacher used it to instruct the class 'this is what you should never do to a car.' I never heard of or saw the Impala again."
